Uranine or fluorescein sodium is a fluorescent dye and one of the most fluorescent colourants used for leak testing, leak detection or water marking. The pure uranine powder is dark red in colour and does not fluoresce. The dye only develops its fluorescent effect when combined with water and appears yellow-green under UV and daylight.
Even at very low concentrations, the seepage of water becomes visible due to the enormous dyeing capacity. The smallest amount of leaking water can be detected with the help of the intense yellow-green color of uranine in leaking waste water pipes, flat roofs, tank systems or pipes in cooling and heating systems.
Depending on its intensity, the fluorescent dye disappears within a few hours or days and is harmless to humans, animals and the environment.
A special feature of uranine is its use as a distress signal for shipwrecked people. In an emergency, the uranine is added to the water, the water surface turns green and can be found more quickly by the emergency services.
Areas of application:
All applications in which the flow behavior of water is to be observed, especially for leak detection, leak testing and water marking, investigation of flow behavior in swimming pools or also for training purposes for the fire department, as bait in fishing, as a dye for soap production or as a distress signal for skippers.
Recommendation for use:
The easily soluble powder is simply added to the water and the desired effect is achieved. A concentration of 1 - 20 g uranine per 1000 liters of water is recommended.
The product is particularly economical and can be detected in small quantities. 0.1 mg/l already leads to a visible discoloration on a white background.
