Graphite rods are made from a mixture of carbon and binder (tar + pitch) by extrusion.
This is a supersaturated mixture, i.e. a high binder content so that it can be extruded.
Thereafter, the extruded rods (green compacts) are subjected to an annealing process.
Here, the binder converts in Bindekoks order by pyrolysis, i.e. Elimination of the volatile constituents.
Therefore always some porosity (pore volume ~ 30%) available.
Therefore, the rods are not always perfectly round, because of the high annealing temperature> 1000
